What Is the Meaning of Christian Charity?

Christian charity is mainly about loving one another. Christians are called to embrace their fellow man with their whole heart and soul; they are called to offer support to their neighbor through their thoughts and their deeds. Christian charity means giving with your heart, as well as your hand, and doing so without boasting or expecting anything in return. Charity is not just about giving to the poor; it is also about truly loving your fellow man.

  1. Applying Charity

    • Donating your time by volunteering, giving to the needy, visiting the sick, and offering an ear to the depressed and hurting are all examples of Christian charity.

    Offering Service

    • Matthew 25:40 says, "Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me." Christians are called to view Christ in all of their neighbors; therefore, they are called to give service to every man as they do for Christ.

    Sacrifice

    • As Jesus gave his life for sinners as well as the just, Christians are expected to be helpful to others. Romans 5:7-8 reminds Christians that, "...only with difficulty does one die for a just person...but God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us."

    Forgiveness

    • To give of yourself unconditionally, which is a requirement of true Christian charity, it is necessary to truly forgive those who you feel may have offended you. Christ says in Luke 6:27:36 to "do to others as you would have them do to you" and "give to everyone who asks of you."

    Love

    • Above all else, Christian charity is about love. 1 Corinthians 13:3 says, "If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing."
