Feline lower urinary tract disease is a common malady in both male and female cats. Reasons for the condition include inflammation of the bladder and urethra caused by stones or crystals that block the urinary tract which prevents urine from passing freely. To help maintain a cat's health and help regulate a past or existing condition, specially formulated urinary health formulas are available in prescription form or through major pet food companies.

  1. Significance

    • Urinary health formulas are designed to address Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) and Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC).

    Effects

    • The low-magnesium and adjusted-pH levels in the urinary health formulas provide a well-balanced diet to address the build-up of oxalate or struvite crystals in the urinary tract.

    Types

    • Urinary health formulas available through retail grocery stores, pet supply stores and online businesses come in both dry and canned form in a variety of textures and flavors.

    Considerations

    • Brand name formulas include: Friskies Special Diet, Iams Veterinary Formulas and Purina One Special Care.
      Hill's Prescription Diet Multicare-C/D for felines requires a prescription and purchase through a veterinarian.

    Warning
