Effects of Sleeping Pills

According to SleepMed, there are 84 classifications of sleep disorders. These include insomnia, narcolepsy, sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. One of the treatments for most of these disorders is to take sleeping pills. However, like all medications, sleeping pills have effects beyond the obvious one of helping you get to sleep.

  1. Parasomnias

    • Parasomnias include involuntary actions such as sleep walking, sleep eating and sleep driving. While sleep walking and sleep eating aren't too dangerous, sleep driving is life-threatening for the driver and others on the road.

    Digestive Troubles

    • Constipation, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting are all effects of sleeping pills. In some cases, these lead to decreased appetite, which may lead to malnutrition.

    Dreams

    • According to WebMD, unusual dreams are one of the effects of sleeping pills. These dreams are considered a preliminary warning of parasomnias.

    Daytime Effects

    • According to Philips, the day after taking sleeping pills, you may still feel some of the effects of the pills, including impaired judgment, sleepiness, memory problems and drowsiness.

    Dependency

    • Some people will become addicted to sleeping pills, which is characterized by an overwhelming feeling of needing the pills to survive. This is a life-altering, and possibly life-threatening, effect.
