What is Digital SLR Technology?

Digital "SLR" stands for single lens reflex. An SLR camera lens that uses a mechanically controlled mirror system and prism to allow light to expose itself to the camera sensor only during the period of exposure right after the shutter is clicked. Digital SLR cameras are preferred by professional photographers because they feature interchangeable lenses and an accurate portrayal of what a shot will look like.

  1. SLR vs Point-and-Shoot

    • Digital point-and-shoot cameras are always exposing the camera's sensor to light and have a single fixed lens which is not interchangeable. Digital SLR cameras control when the light hits the sensor through mechanical means.

    Digital SLR Camera Lenses

    • The vast majority of digital SLR lenses are of the 35mm variety and are of the same basic architecture as film camera lenses. The difference lies in their ability to electronically control aperture via the digital camera's manual controls.

    Drawbacks

    • Digital SLR camera drawbacks include high cost of ownership, including the need to buy different lenses for different purposes. There is also a lack of video recording and high degree of digital zoom, except on the most high-end models.

    Digital SLR Technology Costs

    • Entry-level digital cameras with digital SLR technology start at around $349 new, all the way up to many thousands of dollars for high end professional models. Lenses range from $100 all the way as high as the imagination and pocketbook allows.

    Best Digital SLR Brands

    • Digital SLR camera brands are highly subjective, but some companies who produce good cameras within the price range of most are Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Sony. One of the most respected high-end brands is Hasselblad.
