Dog Liver Disease Symptoms

Liver disease in dogs is one of the top canine fatal diseases. This term is used for any medical impairment of the liver. It can be caused by several different things, including ingested materials or objects, genetics, bacterial infections or an existing health ailment. Although any dog can contract this condition, it is more common in West Highland terriers and cocker spaniels. The liver is an important organ that detoxifies the blood, creates bile and removes waste from the dog's body.

  1. Jaundice

    • The dogs eyes, skin and gums take on a yellowish tinge.

    Defecation

    • Diarrhea can be experienced by dogs suffering from liver disease. Also, the stool appear yellow or gray.

    Depression

    • The dog appears to be depressed or lethargic and act withdrawn, even from those familiar to him.

    Vomiting

    • The dog will be able to keep little in his stomach, vomiting quite often. Sometimes blood will appear and you will notice a swollen stomach.

    Behavior

    • Odd behavior may arise, such as pacing and circling. The dog may appear to be agitated and unable to settle.
