What Is a Crucible Pot?

Crucible pots are used in chemistry for conducting experiments in which a chemical substance needs to be heated to an extremely high temperature. They are usually ceramic but can also be made of metal and are available in various sizes. The small cup-shaped pots are often used with loose-fitting lids that allow any buildup of gases during the heating process to escape.

History

The use of crucible pots dates back to ancient times. Used to melt metals or, later, to make glass, crucible pots have been found at archaeological sites all over the world, including ancient Egypt, China and Bronze Age Europe.

Considerations

Crucible pots must be cleaned carefully. If there is residue that cannot be removed, it's best to start with a new pot. When conducting experiments, it is of utmost importance to start with a perfectly clean crucible pot.

Warning

If the crucible pot is cooled too quickly after being highly heated, it might crack or shatter. Use proper care in dealing with a super-heated crucible. Tongs are used for removing pots from their flames to prevent burns.

Trivia

During the 15th century, heat-resistant crucibles were produced in Hesse (now part of Germany) and were exported to buyers from Scandinavia to the U.S., who sought the highly prized, durable crucibles.

Tip

When melting any powdered metal in a crucible pot, preheat the empty crucible to get it extremely hot. Then, slowly add a little metal powder before bringing the torch flame to the crucible.
