Music Teacher Requirements

Music teachers seem to have fun during their workday, playing various musical instruments or teaching their students how to sing. While this can be fun, the music teacher has spent many years in school developing an in-depth musical knowledge. In addition, the music teacher spent some time as a student teacher. The skills and requirements thus attained lead to a well-rounded teacher.

  1. Educational

    • The music teacher must have a bachelor's degree, and, if employed in a school, a teaching certificate. She must be able to sing and play the keyboard as well as another instrument. Participation in a community performance group is also desired (see link in Resources).

    Talent

    • Music teachers must have musical talent (be able to sing or play an instrument well). This ability and confidence in playing an instrument will carry over into teaching students in the classroom.

    People Skills

    • Since the music teacher will be working closely with students, it helps if he likes interacting with others. One major component of good people skills includes patience in teaching new skills to students who may not have any prior musical experience.

    Continue Learning

    • Music teachers should have the desire to continue their own musical education, since this will help them to impart new skills and knowledge to their students. In addition, music teachers who continue their own education will be considered for higher-level positions and responsibility (see link in Resources).

    Inspire Students

    • Since music teachers are showing new skills to students, their students may be afraid of playing their instrument in front of others. The music teacher has to have the skills to help those students get past the fear and play, whether in class or for a performance.
