What Is a Good Humidity Level in a House?
Humidity is the amount of water vapor in air, whether inside or outside. You can measure the humidity in different rooms with a hygrometer, an inexpensive meter available at discount, department and hardware stores. The hygrometer identifies which parts of the house need adjustment to a good humidity level. Does this Spark an idea?

Good Humidity Levels
-
Optimum humidity is between 40 and 50 percent, with anywhere between 30 and 60 percent acceptable.
Health Issues in Dry Air
-
With indoor humidity of less than 30 percent, health problems can develop, including dry noses and throats that make people more susceptible to upper respiratory illnesses. Skin dryness and irritation may also occur.
-
Dry Wood Problems
-
This low humidity also can cause shrinking and other issues with wood in the home--including paneling, wood trim and flooring. Furniture joints can become loose.
Other Dry House Problems
-
Excessively-low humidity levels in a house can also cause cracks in plaster and drywall.
Damp House Problems
-
In contrast, high humidity levels in a house can cause mold, mildew and musty odors, along with peeling wallpaper and warping wood.
Pests and Allergies
-
Dust mites and many other pests thrive in high humidity. Some people have more allergy problems during high humidity because of the dust mites and mold spores.
