What Does a Highway Patrol Officer Do?

A highway patrol officer is a member of law enforcement who works at the municipal, county or state level. Patrol officers are signed a geographic area and patrol this area in a squad car, enforcing traffic laws, responding to calls from dispatch and reporting their own activities, and dealing with various problem situations.

Traffic Violations

Highway patrol officers monitor drivers and issue warnings and citations for illegal actions such as speeding. They also arrest people who are driving while intoxicated, and issue tickets that mandate automobile safety repair such as replacing a taillight or headlight.

Accidents

Highway patrol officers investigate accidents, call for emergency personnel and administer first aid.

Vehicle Breakdowns

A highway patrol officer also assists motorists with vehicle problems by radioing for mechanics.
