Requirements for Writing Books for Children

Writing a children's book is not child's play. It takes time, commitment, and imagination. A good story comes from a good writer, and the more you write the better you will become.

  1. Gathering Your Story

    • Make sure your story is appropriate and interesting to your targeted audience--children. Visit a book store and a library and see what is current and popular in children's book. Be creative, be imaginative, and be original. If you need some ideas check out Writing Children's Book For Dummies which offers Ten Great Sources for Storylines.

    Learn the Rules

    • Make sure your manuscript is ready and perfected for submission. Know the correct formatting, page length, and age suitability. Learn the basics and the do's and dont's. Children's Writing Web Journal offers a step by step series included in its Newsletter for Children's Writers. The Institute of Children's Literature offers courses, aptitude tests, and a free eNews letter.

    Do's and Dont's

    • When writing any kind of book it is always imperative that the author is precise and accurate with content, spelling, grammar, and facts. Also an interesting topic is current and popular. Do not talk baby talk. Do not lecture. Do tell an interesting story that has a meaning and a moral.

    Find the Right Publisher

    • There are many resources available to help you find a publisher. Check out children's books at a book store or a library. Contact the Children's Book Council or subscribe to Children's Book Insider. Writing Children's Books For Dummies includes the Ten Best Ways to Promote Your Story.

    Don't Get Scammed

    • If we have learned anything recently it is that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Check out everything and everyone. An excellent starting point is the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators.

    Getting Help

    • Seek and you shall find--help that is. Join a writing group or a writing club, take a class and brain storm with other writers. Groups are found online, at community colleges, libraries, or you can start your own. Most of all, write and write and write until you get it right.
