What Does Baytril Treat?
Baytril is prescribed for specific medical conditions in which bacteria are present. This broad-spectrum antibiotic has proven effective against gram-negative and certain gram-positive bacteria, particularly Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus intermedius, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis. Baytril has been used successfully with dogs, cats, birds and farm animals like cattle and pigs. It is dispensed as a liquid, flavored tablets, regular tablets or as a solution for injection.

Skin Infections
-
There are usually many factors involved in the development of skin infections, but if it's a recurring or chronic problem, bacterial pathogens are suspected. Baytril penetrates the affected layers of tissue and maintains a high concentration for the duration of the treatment.
Urinary Tract Infection
-
The bacteria responsible for urinary tract infections is highly susceptible to Baytril, especially in those cases where other antibiotics have not brought about a required response.
-
Respiratory Infections
-
Baytril quickly kills the four main types of pathogens that cause respiratory infections. As part of the fluoroquinolone group of antibiotics, Baytril disrupts the DNA of these bacteria, causing their death.
Wound Infections
-
If a secondary infection results from a wound, Baytil is usually prescribed. A period of treatment with Baytril effectively destroys the bacteria and allows the original wound to heal.
Ear Infections
-
Baytril is also dispensed as ear drops to treat infections that have tested positive for the presence of bacteria.
Gastrointestinal Infections
-
The quick absorption rate of Baytril from the digestive tract allows this antibiotic to penetrate the tissues within two hours and to maintain a steady concentration for up to twelve hours.
Warning
-
Since it's believed to cause cartilage damage in puppies, Baytril is not recommended for dogs under the age of eight months. Minimal side effects, like appetite loss and diarrhea, may occur.
