Early Warning Signs of a Difficult Pregnancy

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 20 percent of the 4 million American women who give birth each year experience a complication during pregnancy. Although most difficult pregnancies can be managed safely, the key is recognizing the warning signs and seeking care from a midwife or obstetrician. Warning signs of a difficult pregnancy often appear early in pregnancy.

  1. Bleeding

    • Bleeding may occur if the placenta is lying too low or if it separates from the uterine wall, or there may be no identifiable cause.

    Anemia

    • Extreme fatigue, weakness and dizziness can be a warning sign of anemia--a lack of adequate iron in the bloodstream. Anemia and its resulting tiredness can cause a difficult pregnancy.

    Gestational Diabetes

    • If blood sugar levels are too high in pregnancy--a condition called gestational diabetes--pregnancy may be complicated by the need for strict diet control or insulin shots.

    High Blood Pressure

    • High blood pressure can present early in pregnancy, necessitating close monitoring to ensure that it doesn't turn into preeclampsia, a difficult pregnancy complication.

    Hyperemesis Gravidarum

    • A condition called hyperemesis gravidarum in which the mother has extreme nausea and vomiting, can cause difficulties because it can prevent the mother from getting enough nutrients.
