The biologically appropriate raw food (BARF) diet may be right for your dog if most commercial pet foods are not as healthy as you would like. Learn how to switch your pets to a raw food diet, and how they can benefit from the change.

    Ingredients

  1. Dogs are omnivores, so they do best with a mix of about 75 percent meat and 25 percent fruits and vegetables. It is also okay to include small amounts of egg or dairy a few times a week.
  2. Meat

  3. Fresh meat can be obtained at a butcher or grocery store. Turkey necks, wings and backs are ideal, especially human-grade organic turkey.
  4. Commercial Diets

  5. You can get raw dog food as frozen patties from Nature's Variety. Honest Kitchen offers several types of dehydrated raw food for dogs; it is simply mixed with warm water.
  6. Considerations

  7. Because we have different digestive systems from our canine friends, humans can be more susceptible to the contamination that may be present in raw meat. Reduce the risk by cleaning appropriately using bleach or a natural cleaning solution.
  8. Benefits

  9. After switching to a raw diet, many dogs show improved dental health (including better breath), a healthier shinier coat, fewer skin problems and boosted immune function.
  10. Supplements

  11. Probiotics, digestive enzymes and essential fatty acid supplements can all give your dog a boost in health and well-being.
