Careers in Sports Photography

While attending college for photography, journalism or art school, some may dream of a career photographing sports. From covering live action to portraits of team members and coaches, there are many options to have a career in sports photography.

  1. Photojournalism

    • To shoot game action, consider a career in photojournalism. Working for a newspaper, wire service or magazine, you will have assignments for coverage of game action, features of coaches and enthusiastic crowd shots.

    Agencies

    • Working for a photo agency, such as Black Star or Sigma, allows a professional to shoot in specific areas, including sports (see Resources).

    Companies

    • Working for athletic organizations or companies that sponsor or host athletic tournaments is another way to have a career shooting live sports.

    Studios

    • All athletes need professional head shots for game programs, media releases and private use. Working for a portrait studio in a city with professional teams will create the option for portrait style sports photography.

    Education

    • Although a degree is not necessary to attain a job photographing sports, having one will allow you to gain more prestigious clientele and positions. Degrees to consider are four-year photojournalism and arts degrees. Two-year trade schools also offer programs specifically geared towards photography.
