Diabetic Canine Symptoms

In canine diabetes, the dog's body cannot make enough blood sugar to survive. Dog diabetes is nearly identical to Type II diabetes in humans, which develops as a result of a bad diet. Overweight dogs are prone to getting diabetes. Canine diabetes is manageable through diet changes and injections.

  1. Constant Thirst

    • According to "Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook," the diabetic dog will always be thirsty. This thirst never seems to be slaked. Because of the constant drinking, the dog will urinate a lot more than usual (see Resources).

    Constant Hunger

    • Along with increased thirst, the dog will also have increased hunger and may eat garbage, plants or plastic to satiate his hunger.

    Weight Loss

    • In later stages, the diabetic body can't digest food properly, so even overweight dogs will suddenly lose weight.

    Weakness

    • Generally, the dog will be less active than usual. In later stages, the dog will have problems controlling her hindquarters. Hopefully, you will have her at the vet's by then.

    Other Symptoms

    • According to "The Veterinarian's Guide to Your Dog's Symptoms," diabetic dogs often get other symptoms not usually associated with diabetes. These include skin and coat problems, bald patches, vomiting and diarrhea (see Resources).
