Canada Border Rules

With mounting security concerns and stricter border rules, traveling to Canada can be a frustrating experience for many travelers. The easiest way to ensure that your trip to Canada starts off smoothly is to be aware of the rules and regulations you will encounter when crossing the border.

Identification

All travelers crossing the Canadian border must show proof of citizenship or a valid passport.

Pets

When traveling with pets, you must bring a document signed by a veterinarian certifying that the pet has received the rabies vaccine.

Alcohol

If bringing alcohol across the border, maximum limits of 40 ounces of liquor or wine and 24 12-ounce containers of beer are allowed. Duty and taxes must be paid on any amount of alcohol over the limit.

Tobacco

To avoid paying duty, the maximum amount of tobacco you are free to bring into Canada is 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes and 7 ounces of loose tobacco.

Gifts

There is a maximum monetary value of $60 (Canadian) for gifts. Gifts worth more than that amount are subject to duty and taxes.

Money

If you entering Canada with more than $10,000 (Canadian), you must report to the Canadian Border Services Agency either upon entry or before leaving the country.

Weapons

All legal, registered weapons must be reported and declared upon entry. You cannot enter Canada with mace or pepper spray.
