About Fashion Teen Magazines
In an effort to tap into the burgeoning teen fashion market, many publishers have branched out into the world of teen fashion magazines. These publications are smaller than their adult counterparts, with brighter colors and editorial content that appeals to a younger crowd. However, there is the danger that these magazines paint an unrealistic picture of beauty for young girls and boys. Does this Spark an idea?

Popular Teen Magazines
-
Leading teen print fashion magazines include "Seventeen" and "Cosmo Girl!" (published by Hearst Publications), along with Conde Nast's "Teen Vogue." The last two titles are marketed as younger offshoots of the more mature "Cosmopolitan" and "Vogue" magazines.
Function
-
Teen fashion magazines feature photos with teenage models in clothing suitable for the youth demographic. There are also current-events articles, entertainment and gossip columns and advice forums.
-
Considerations
-
There have been several teen magazines that have shuttered due to poor sales, since many teens simply choose to read adult fashion publications. Magazines that have recently closed due to sparse readership are "YM," "Teen People" and "ELLEGirl."
Benefits
-
Teen fashion magazines dispense age-appropriate fashion and lifestyle information without the sometimes revealing editorial shots of the adult magazines. They also feature lower-priced garments that are more in keeping with teenage discretionary cash flow.
Warning
-
Camille Kraeplin of Southern Methodist University notes that there may be too much of a focus on looks and sexuality in teen publications. Though there is a wider range of shapes in teen magazines than in women's, she notes that "the images of slim, flawlessly beautiful models and celebrities girls see in teen magazines ... serve as the standard by which they judge themselves. By promoting certain roles and values, these magazines also teach girls what it means to be a woman in American society."
