There are some weight lifters that like to get an abundance of protein in their bodies every single day. They walk into the gym with shaker in hand and ready for action. Inside it lies one to two scoops of their favorite protein powder, just waiting to be joined by some ice cold water. It is true that the body needs protein for muscle growth, but as with anything else, too much of a good thing can actually be harmful.

  • Protein is the building block of muscle fiber. It also contributes to immunity, healthy cell function and also metabolism.

Function

  • The function of protein powders is to supplement the diet with protein when taking it in high amounts. It is used in shakes and added to foods like oatmeal and yogurt.

Weakened Bones

  • Getting too much protein powder can make your blood acidic. In order to return to a basic level, your body will leach calcium from the bones. This can weaken them over time.

Kidney Stones

  • Kidney stones are little pieces of calcium that clump together and end up in the kidneys. If they are too large, they need to be surgically removed.

Ketosis

  • This is a condition where the diet is high in protein and low in carbs. The body uses fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. This can put undue stress on the liver and kidneys.

Shakes

  • Drinking protein shakes all day long with no food can also have a negative impact on the body. It gets so used to the shakes that the body then has a hard time digesting carbs and fats.
