About the Flag of Brazil
The flag of Brazil has been the country's standard since November 19, 1889. The bright design features a green background with a wide yellow diamond shape in the center. Inside the diamond, a blue globe is centered that is dotted on its bottom half with white stars, and banded across the middle with a white banner that has the words "Ordem e Progresso" written in green.

The flag was originally designed by Raimundo Teixeira Mendes to commemorate the start of the First Brazilian Republic, and has only received minor changes since then.
Nickname

The Brazilian flag is also referred to affectionately as "Auriverde," which is Portuguese for "gold and green."

Original Design

The original flag designed to symbolize the First Republic was heavily based on the American flag, and featured a green field striped with gold and bearing a small blue square in the top left corner filled with one star for every Brazilian state. It was only used for four days.
