About Organic Mineral Makeup

Organic mineral makeup has been around since the mid 1970s, but it has now become one of the biggest sellers in the cosmetic industry. Made from finely ground minerals found in nature, it is marketed as “natural makeup,” healthier for the skin and environmentally safer than chemical-based makeup, but many companies include potentially harmful additives in their product formulations. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Beneficial Ingredients

    • Organic mineral makeup is made of crushed, sterilized minerals from the earth without any of the chemicals, dyes and preservatives found in traditional makeup. Many of the toxins found in chemical-based makeup--talc, oil, artificial colors, chemical dyes, petroleum products, and parabens--are not present in mineral makeup.

    Harmful or Questionable Ingredients

    • In their article, "Mineral Cosmetics: Healthy or Hazardous?" Green Living Ideas states that some mineral makeup may contain ingredients that can be harmful or toxic. Possible carcinogens that may be included in makeup products are Titanium Dioxide, Talc, Parabens, Synthetic Dyes, FD&C Colors, and a possible skin irritant, Bismuth Oxychloride.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Reported allergic reactions are rare because allergens such as fragrances, dyes and preservatives are generally not used. Mineral makeup is noncomedogenic; it allows the skin to breathe, does not clog the pores and is safer for sensitive skin, acne and rosacea-prone skin.

    Sunscreen Protection

    • Most mineral makeup contains a low SPF rating of 15. Additional sunscreen with a higher SPF rating should be worn under makeup as a precautionary measure.

    Cost

    • The price for organic mineral makeup has a wide range from less than $10 to well over $50.
