About Stress Colitis in Dogs

Despite what you may think, dogs--like humans--can often suffer from stress. When this happens, the dog's colon can become inflamed. That's a condition known as colitis. Although most dogs with colitis live a normal life (and look and act healthy), the condition can cause owners undue worry.

  1. Symptoms

    • According to Mar Vista Animal Medical Center, signs of stress colitis include vomiting stomach bile (yellowish-looking fluid), constipation, diarrhea, gas and blood-tinged stool.

    Effects

    • Although it's not life-threatening, colitis is an uncomfortable condition that can cause your dog to have painful and frequent bowel movements.

    Risks

    • Many breeds--such as Boxers, Schnauzers and Spaniels--are more prone to colitis than others.

    Considerations

    • In addition to stress, colitis may also be caused by parasites such as whipworms and a dog's diet, according to Pet Education Website.

    Prevention

    • Although there is no way to prevent colitis, you should select a high-fiber dog food. Also make sure your pet stays well-hydrated.

    Warning

    • The Mar Vista Animal Medical Center urges you to consult your veterinarian before diagnosing your dog with stress colitis, as he may need medication or a special diet.
