Home Remedies to Stop Dog Shedding

Whether they have long or short fur, dogs shed. When a change of season is around the corner, shedding increases, creating more clean-up work in the home. A dog will always naturally shed, but there are a few simple ways to make the dog shed less when there is not a change in the weather.

  1. Diet

    • Feed the dog a diet high in quality nutrients, protein and fatty acids. Poor-quality dog food is full of fillers that don't nourish the dog's skin, making the skin dry and the hair follicles loose, which promotes shedding.

    Additives

    • Supplements can be added to dog food that contain high concentrations of oils to nourish the skin. They are available in the vitamin and health-product section of larger pet stores.

    Grooming

    • Brush the dog daily. This will remove loose fur into the brush, rather than throughout the house. Apply a spray-on skin conditioner to moisturize the dog and promote skin elasticity.

    Effects

    • Less shedding in the home means fewer allergic reactions, stuffy noses and furry furniture.

    Misconceptions

    • Bathing a dog frequently will not reduce the amount of shedding. Washing the pet actually dries out the skin, which can increase the amount of shedding.
