What Causes a Canker Sore?

Canker sores are small ulcers that may appear in the mouth. They usually appear on the gums, in the cheeks, on the inner lip or on the tongue. Canker sores can be very painful and sensitive to the touch, making it difficult for an individual to eat or drink. Canker sores are very common. Although they are not contagious, they may linger in the mouth between 7 to 10 days.

    • Unfortunately, the precise cause of canker sores is not currently known. However, there are a number of factors that are suspected of contributing to the development of canker sores.

    Immune Dysfunction

    • Canker sores are not believed to stem from a viral or bacterial infection. However, immune dysfunction is suspected as being a possible cause of canker sores.

    Genetics

    • Genetics is also suspected of playing a role in whether an individual will develop canker sores. Heredity may also determine whether an individual will suffer from them occasionally or frequently.

    Injuries

    • Injuries such as scratching the lip or gums while eating hard foods can irritate the area. Such impacts to the mouth may cause an individual to develop a canker sore.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Canker sore treatments include using anti-inflammatory gels, pain killers and local anesthetics. Individuals can help prevent canker sores by not brushing hard or eating food that may scratch the mouth.
