What Is an Athletic Trainer?

An athletic trainer is certified and knowledgeable in a combination of sports training and medicine. They work with health care and sports professionals in prevention and treatment of injuries. An athletic trainer is much different from a personal trainer, who does not need to be certified and is mainly concerned with fitness.

  1. Certification

    • Prospective athletic trainers must graduate with at least a Bachelor's degree from a school with an accredited professional athletic training education program. Continuing education throughout the career of an athletic trainer is needed to keep up with the latest information.

    Certification

    • It is necessary for an athletic trainer to pass a test for certification after degree completion. The Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC) is the only accredited group that certifies athletic trainers in the United States.

    Duties

    • An athletic trainer is trained and capable of handling many health areas, including injury and illness prevention, assessment and care; therapeutic modalities and exercise; Kinesiology; nutrition; and pharmacology.

    Types of Jobs

    • Athletic trainers are needed for sports teams in high schools, universities and pro leagues. There are also needs for athletic trainers at physician offices and hospitals, in the performing arts and in the military.

    Potential

    • Many athletic trainers hold at least Master's degrees. Some choose to go on to medical school to become doctors.
