Vinpocetine Research

Vinpocetine is a dietary supplement extracted from periwinkle. Research shows that vinpocetine increases blood flow and reduces blood clotting (see Resources). Vinpocetine also acts as a powerful antioxidant, and because it crosses the blood brain barrier it acts to protect the brain and nervous system from oxidative damage. Vinpocetine has been widely used in Europe and Japan to prevent and treat cardiovascular and nervous system disorders.

  1. Stroke

    • Vinpocetine increases metabolism and blood flow in the brain, increasing nutrient and oxygen flow to areas damaged by stroke.

    Cognitive Dysfunction

    • Vinpocetine improves muscle and movement control, speech ability and perception in those with degenerative cognitive disease.

    Hearing

    • Vinpocetine improves hearing and reduces tinnitus symptoms following ear trauma and in those with Meniere's disease.

    Macular Degeneration

    • Vinpocetine increases blood flow to the tissues of the eye. Vinpocetine treatment improves visual function in those with age-related macular degeneration.

    Warning

    • Like any dietary supplement, consult your physician prior to taking vinpocetine if you are being monitored for any health condition or taking any prescription medications, especially blood thinners.
