About US Navy Ships

The United States Navy has numerous types of ships, and each type of ship has a specific purpose. However, all of the personnel on all these ships work together for a common goal: to protect the United States and its interests abroad. In an effort to streamline the fleet, the U.S. Navy assigns each active ship to a carrier group.

  1. Aircraft Carriers

    • Aircraft carriers are the largest ships in the United States Navy fleet. They are considered the powerhouse of the fleet and are often likened to a floating city, coming complete with an airstrip for planes to take off and land.

    Submarines

    • Submarines have been a part of the U.S. Navy since 1900 with the purpose of carrying out a varied selection of missions, including supporting Special Operations Forces. Attack subs, ballistic subs and guided missile subs are the classifications used by the Navy.

    Amphibious Assault Ships

    • Amphibious assault ships carry personnel and heavy equipment to various locations around the world, including remote locations without areas to load or unload the ships.

    Destroyers

    • The United States Navy calls destroyers the Greyhounds of the Sea because these are fast ships that were originally designed as torpedo boat destroyers.

    Other Ships

    • The U.S. Navy still uses frigates and cruisers as well. Battleships are no longer a part of the U.S. Navy fleet.
