What Muscles Does the Stairmaster Target?

The Stairmaster is one of those machines that is very tricky. At first glance, you wouldn't think that it can cause much of an impact. But it actually provides an intense cardio workout. It is easy on the joints and you can have a great workout in 20 minutes. Another added benefit is that, unlike other cardio machines, the Stairmaster actually does work the muscles.

  1. Quads

    • The quads are the main muscle part of the leg. They are located on the front of the thigh. Every time the knee is extending, the quads are being worked.

    Hamstrings

    • The hamstrings are located on the back part of the leg. They are being worked when the knee is flexing.

    Glutes

    • The glutes are one of the most targeted muscles when using the Stairmaster. Every time you step up, your glutes are being worked.

    Calves

    • The calves are on the back part of the leg below the knee. They are being worked when your ankle flexes and extends when you are stepping.

    Anterior Tibialis

    • The muscles on the front of the shin are called the tibialis anterior muscles. They are being worked when the foot is being flexed. This also occurs during the step-up motion.

    Core

    • The muscles of the core are also being worked. In particular, the hip flexors contract when your leg is being bent at the hip.
