Dog Diarrhea Cures

At some point in their lives, all dogs will get diarrhea. If they are otherwise fine and only have had diarrhea for less than a day, then you can try to take care of it yourself. But if your dog has diarrhea and other symptoms like vomiting, lack of energy or blood in the stool, then get to a vet as soon as possible.

  1. Witholding Food

    • For dogs that only have had four or less piles of loose stools, do not feed them for 24 hours but make sure they have access to water. This can often help clear up minor diarrhea attacks.

    Pepto-Bismol

    • This is one of the few over-the-counter people medicines safe for dogs. Give by syringe--1/2 tsp. per 10 lbs. of weight--once every 12 hours.

    Kaopectate

    • This is another human medication generally safe for dogs. Use the same dosage as for Pepto-Bismol. If the dog still has diarrhea after a day, contact the vet.

    Bland Diet

    • Feed only boiled chicken breast and rice for a day. If the diarrhea doesn't clear up, call the vet.

    Severe Diarrhea

    • Severe diarrhea is when a dog defecates loose stool six or more times in one day. Contact your vet if this happens.
