About Feline Hypoglycemia

Feline hypoglycemia is a potentially serious condition characterized by abnormally low blood sugar (below 70 mg/dL). Cats in general have a high risk for developing hypoglycemia, although it is most common in cats with diabetes. According to the Cornell Feline Health Center (CFHC), hypoglycemia can be serious if it is not treated immediately. Your veterinarian can determine if your cat has hypoglycemia with a simple blood test.

  1. Causes

    • Hypoglycemia can occur in healthy cats that skip meals or lose their appetite. It is most commonly seen, however, in diabetic cats that receive an overdose of insulin medication, according to the CFHC (see Resources).

    Symptoms

    • Your cat may appear fatigued, weak and frequently lose her balance when she is suffering from hypoglycemia. The CFHC notes that serious cases of hypoglycemia can cause seizures and unconsciousness.

    Treatment

    • If you suspect your cat has hypoglycemia, the CFHC recommends offering food. If your cat refuses to eat, rub some high fructose corn syrup on her tongue and gums and take her to the veterinarian as soon as possible.

    Prognosis

    • Hypoglycemia can be successfully treated by a veterinarian, but it is important to seek help for your cat right away. According to the CFHC, untreated hypoglycemia can be life threatening.

    Prevention

    • You can prevent feline hypoglycemia by feeding your cat on a regular schedule. If your cat has diabetes, always administer the correct dose of insulin at the appropriate times.
