About the Side Effects of Advantage for Dogs
Not only can fleas be an incredible annoyance, but they can also spread disease and infection to your dog. Advantage, a once-monthly flea control treatment, is applied topically to your dog's skin. The active ingredient, imidacloprid, paralyzes and kills fleas and flea larvae on contact. According to the manufacturer, Bayer Animal Health Division, Advantage kills over 98 percent of fleas within 12 hours of application. The manufacturer notes that dog owners may notice the following side effects in their dogs.
-
Skin Irritation
-
Some dogs may experience red and itchy skin where Advantage is applied. This side effect will typically occur in the first day or two after the initial application.
Oily Fur
-
Because Advantage is applied topically, it can cause your dog's fur to appear oily on the application site. The oily appearance will fade after 1 or 2 days.
-
Drooling
-
Advantage is applied to your dog's back to prevent him from licking or ingesting it. If your dog licks it off his fur, it may cause excessive drooling.
Individual Sensitivities
-
Bayer notes that some dogs may develop sensitivities to the active ingredient in Advantage. Visit your veterinarian if you notice vomiting, diarrhea or other sudden changes in your dog's health after using Advantage.
In Humans
-
Wash your hands thoroughly after applying Advantage to your dog. This product can cause stinging or irritation in humans if it comes into contact with your eyes or skin.
