Advantage is a topical treatment designed specifically for flea control in dogs and cats. It is manufactured by Bayer Animal Health Division and contains imidacloprid, an active ingredient that paralyzes fleas and eventually leads to their death. One application of Advantage will protect your dog from fleas for an entire month.

  1. Application

    • Advantage is applied directly to the skin in between the shoulder blades for dogs who weigh 20 pounds or less. In dogs over 20 pounds, Advantage is applied to four spots along the dog's back.

    Dosing

    • The size of the dose is based on the weight of your dog. Advantage is sold in packages for dogs 10 pounds and under, between 11 and 20 pounds, between 21 and 50 pounds and for dogs over 55 pounds.

    Effectiveness

    • Advantage starts killing biting fleas within five minutes, according to the manufacturer. Adult fleas will begin dying one hour after application and the vast majority of the fleas on your dog should be dead within 12 hours.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects of Advantage are rare, but your dog may develop skin irritation. Your dog's fur will also appear oily where the treatment was applied, but this will go away after two or three days.
