Comparing High Definition DVD to Blue Ray DVD

While the battle between next generation media formats is now over, many people still don't really know the differences between Blu-ray and HD DVD. Blu-ray came out on top, and HD DVD has been discontinued. Let's look at the two formats, keeping in mind that the standard DVD format is still alive and well.

  1. Capacity

    • HD DVD has a capacity of 15 to 30 GB (Gigabytes), and Blu-ray's capacity is 25 to 50 GB. Ordinary DVDs only hold 4.7 GB.

    Main Hardware Support

    • HD DVDs were primarily supported by Toshiba, Sanyo, NEC, Microsoft and Intel. Blu-ray was supported by a much larger list, including Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Pioneer, LG, Dell, HP and Apple Computers.

    Entertainment Company Support

    • HD DVD was supported by HBO, New Line Cinema, Paramount Home Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and Warner Home Video. Blu-ray is supported by Twentieth Century Fox, Vivendi Universal, Electronic Arts and Walt Disney. However, now that HD DVD has been discontinued, all major entertainment companies are backing Blu-ray.

    Video Games

    • The Sony Playstation 3 supports Blu-ray, while the Microsoft Xbox 360 did sell an add-on for a time that allowed HD DVD playback.

    Quality

    • While Blu-ray has the ability to hold much more content, including special features and other extras, the video quality of each of the formats is essentially the same.
