When someone is suffering from ulcerative colitis, there is a diet (or a grouping of foods) a person can adhere to that may lessen the intensity of the symptoms often accompanying this inflammatory bowel disease. The need for this change is that a person with this particular condition usually finds that his colon and/or rectum become so inflamed that ulcers eventually develop. Once present, certain foods may begin to irritate and even worsen this ulceration within his digestive tract. To avoid this, a person may want to consider sticking to a diet plan that is better suited for this condition.

Water

Though not a food, a person with ulcerative colitis should make sure to drink at least 64 ounces of water a day, which is basically 8 glasses. This will help keep you "regular."

Vegetables

It is important to maintain a healthy diet while dealing with ulcerative colitis, so you should still make sure to eat vegetables. Most are complete safe to eat with this condition, but some are better than others, including beets, peppers potatoes, eggplant, cucumber, celery, carrots, mushrooms, lettuce and zucchini, to name a few.

Fruits

Another beneficial food group for someone suffering from ulcerative colitis is fruits, including bananas, grapes, peaches, melons, apricots and even applesauce.

Low Fiber Grains

Many people suffering from ulcerative colitis have found it beneficial to stick to low-fiber grains, especially during an attack. This would include rice, pasta (refined), cornflakes (and other low fiber cereals), bread (refined), bagels and soda crackers.

Whole Grains

While you may want to stick to lower fiber foods during an attack, you should eat whole grains when not suffering symptoms of ulcerative colitis. It is still important to be well-balanced with your food choices.

Protein

Stick to lean, more tender meats when living with ulcerative colitis. You should also feel comfortable eating eggs as well as fish.

Dairy

Feel free to include dairy in your diet, especially if you have a tolerance for it. Since each person is different, you may need to limit your amount, but only if you have a flare up due to it.
