Probation Officer Training
Probation officers serve a very special purpose in society. They are usually one of the few, if not only direct links between a former criminal and society. Probation officers help former criminals adjust to life in society and help support legal means of making a living.

College

Probation officers generally earn a 4-year degree in Criminal Justice. Some probation officers also earn degrees in Social Work or in Psychology.
Tests

The prospective probation officer must successfully complete several tests, including a psychological, physical and oral test.

Additional Training

Some employers require additional training that is often covered by the federal or state government. A certification test is sometimes required as well.
Age

Probation officers must begin their careers between the age of 21 and 37.
Mental Health

Probation officers need to stand in good mental health, as they will deal with many difficult and strange personalities. Good people skills are required, as well as a lot of patience with a hard-nosed attitude.
