Computer Learning Games for Kids

In the information age, children are becoming savvy and skilled in the area of computers and technology. So it may be wise for parents and educators to take advantage of children's interest in computers, as there are many games geared toward learning that can assist children with their studies.

  1. In the Classroom

    • Computer games are no longer used solely for home entertainment. In 2007, Project Tomorrow reported that 11 percent of teachers today are using computer games to enhance the learning environment and help children in the classroom (see Resources).

    Who Plays?

    • On a typical day, about one in four children between the ages of 4 and 6 will use a computer. The average time spent may be over an hour, according to the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation (see Resources).

    Parents' Opinion

    • Parents of these keyboarding kids are pleased with the effects, as an overwhelming 72 percent state that they feel computers help children's learning (Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation).

    Choosing Games

    • Computer learning games should be age appropriate, but when choosing a game for a struggling child, consider the level of learning that is suitable for that child, rather than the age. Gender can be considered also, as some games include characters that may be more appealing to either girls or boys.

    Free Games

    • Anyone interested in trying out games for learning can find a host of options on the Internet, many of them free (see Resources).
