Immigration Requirements in the UK

Visitors to the United Kingdom (UK) may stay for 6 months. After this, you have to apply for permission to remain in the country. Permanent immigration, which the English deem as indefinite leave to remain, has a number of requirements handled through the UK Border Agency, a department of the British Home Office.

  1. Residency Requirements

    • Depending on the type of visa granted, you must live in the UK for a period that usually runs between 2 to 5 years. An application must be made no later than 28 days before the end of the period.

    Visa Categories

    • Only those in certain categories are eligible to apply for permanent residence. (See Resources; these are listed in the "Application Types" section.)

    Naturalization

    • Gaining British Citizenship through Naturalization, which would confer the right of permanent residence, is possible under certain circumstances. For example, if you are over 18 and have lived in the UK for at least 5 years, you can apply.

    Knowledge of the UK

    • Persons over 18 and under 65 who wish to immigrate and take up permanent residence must pass tests to demonstrate sufficient awareness of life and language in the UK.

    Costs

    • There is a fee of £750 for applications by mail or £950 if applying in person. The UK has limited ways that postal applications can be made, but they do include checks, Visa or MasterCard and bank drafts.
