Mouth Melanoma in Dogs

Melanoma can affect dogs as well as people. Melanoma of the mouth is one of the most common kinds of cancers in dogs. Mouth melanoma strikes older pets more often than puppies. Any breed of dog can develop melanoma, but some breeds are more susceptible than others. Poodles, spaniels, retrievers and schnauzers are among the breeds of dogs who commonly develop mouth melanoma.

  1. Definition

    • Mouth melanoma is the occurrence of tumors on the mouth area and lips. The tumors may be, but are not always, dark in color.

    Causes

    • According to the vets at Petsplace.com, there is no real known cause for mouth melanoma in dogs (see Resources).

    Symptoms

    • In addition to the placement of tumors on the mouth and lips, dogs with melanoma often have bad breath and produce more saliva. Canines with this disease may also have trouble eating due to loose teeth.

    Diagnostic Testing

    • Mouth melanoma is diagnosed through biopsies of the tumors, fine needle aspiration of the growths and through blood tests.

    Treatment

    • Treatment mirrors cancer treatment in humans. Surgical removal of the tumors, along with radiation and chemotherapy can help restore a dog's health.
