United States Passport Requirements for Felons

Currently, there are no laws that prevent felons from acquiring a U.S. Passport. However, it's still largely up to the Department of State Passport Agency. Even with a passport, felons may have difficulty entering another country. Some countries, for example, do not allow convicted felons to enter while others may restrict entrance based on the type of crime that was committed.

Complete Application

The DS-11 Application must be completed and submitted with supporting materials to which will be returned to the applicant along with the new passport if the individual qualifies.

Proof of Citizenship

Applicants must provide a certified birth certificate that has a raised and embossed seal. Include the date the certificate was issued, full legal name, sex, the full name of the applicant's parents and place of birth.

Proof of Identity

An acceptable form of identification must be submitted. This can include a valid driver's license, a previous passport or Certificate of Naturalization.

Photos

Submit two identical 2x2 color photographs that were taken within six months of the application. Photos should have a white or off-white background with the full frontal view of the individual's face.

Application Fee

Fees range from $75 to $160 depending whether the individual applies in person or online and how quickly the passport is processed.
