Laptop Battery Troubleshooting Tips

Laptops are susceptible to all kinds of problems, some of the most common revolving around the battery and power cables. If you are having issues with your laptop involving a lack of power, calm your nerves and get to troubleshooting. You may find that the solution is a simple one.

  1. Read the Manual

    • Laptop manuals often have details on extending and/or maintaining the life and capacity of the battery. Depending on the laptop manufacturer and battery type, instructions may range from never using a power adapter if your battery is full or fully discharging the battery as often as once per week.

    Power Outlet

    • The problem isn't necessarily anything to do with your laptop. Take a moment and verify that the power outlet you are using to charge your battery is working, or try another outlet altogether.

    Cable Connections

    • There may be an interruption in the power flow causing the battery to remain uncharged. Check all of the cable connections, including the power outlet plug, the transformer box connection (if there is one) and the connection to the back of your laptop.

    Check the Battery

    • Remove your battery from the laptop and verify that there is no debris in or around the connections and that the battery still fits snugly to the unit. Also, check for any other tell-tale signs, such as burn marks or signs of an impact.

    Call the Manufacturer

    • If you are not able to solve your problem by means of these steps, at least you will be quite knowledgeable about what isn't the problem. Call your laptop manufacturer and see what they can do to help.
