Xray Tech Requirements

X-ray technicians work in clinics, hospitals, or diagnostic imaging centers. They prepare patients for X-ray procedures and operate X-ray machinery. Read on to learn more about X-ray tech requirements.

  1. X-ray Technician Program

    • X-ray techs graduate from an accredited X-ray technician program at a community college, vocational college or trade school.

    Associate's Degree

    • X-ray tech programs generally take two years to complete and culminate in an associate's degree.

    Internships

    • Most X-ray tech programs require students to complete an internship at a hospital, clinic or diagnostic imaging facility. Students will gain first-hand experience operating X-ray equipment and preparing patients for filming.

    Certification

    • Although certification isn't mandatory to become an X-ray tech, many hospitals will only consider applicants who are certified.

    Exam

    • To become certified, X-ray techs take the certification exam offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
