Pulmonary Signs in Stage 4 Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the most deadly cancer for both men and women in large part because it produces few signs or symptoms until it has advanced and spread. However, once lung cancer has become more advanced, it will usually produce pulmonary symptoms.

    Coughing

  1. This is by far the most common symptom, occurring in three-fourths of people with lung cancer, according to onconurse.com. The cough may also be accompanied by bloody sputum, which occurs in more than half of all cases.
  2. Shortness of Breath

  3. This symptom occurs in more than one-third of all lung cancers, including those in stage IV. Paralysis of the diaphragm, another pulmonary lung cancer symptom, can also present as shortness of breath, according to onconurse.com
  4. Chest Pain

  5. Chest pain occurs in one-quarter of all advanced lung cancer cases.
  6. Hoarseness

  7. Hoarseness is the next most common symptom in advanced lung cancer occurring in 18 percent of cases (onconurse.com).
  8. Other Pulmonary Symptoms

  9. Other pulmonary symptoms may be present in stage IV lung cancer cases: wheezing, recurrent pneumonia and bronchitis and difficulty swallowing (also called dysphagia).
