Natural Aid for Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a sleeping condition in which breathing stops for short pauses. There are two main forms of sleep apnea, obstructive and central sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is more common and occurs when the muscle tissue in the throat relaxes enough that the tissues obstruct air flow. Central sleep apnea occurs when there is a failure in the part of the brain that controls breathing to properly regulate breathing during sleep. While medical intervention is often required, steps can be taken to moderate the condition when it is a mild form.
-
Weight Control
-
Sleep apnea is exacerbated by excessive weight. Losing excess weight can help to alleviate the symptoms of sleep apnea.
Avoid Stimulants
-
Caffeine and nicotine both increase the risk and severity of sleep apnea. Reducing or eliminating the intake of these stimulants can help to moderate the effects of the condition.
-
Avoid Alcohol
-
In obstruction sleep apnea, over-relaxation of the muscles in the throat lead to the obstruction. Alcohol increases the relaxation of the musculature and can worsen obstruction sleep apnea. Reducing or avoiding alcohol intake can help to alleviate obstruction sleep apnea in some cases.
Valerian Root
-
Valerian root exerts a sedative effect on the central nervous system. It may be helpful in alleviating central sleep apnea.
5 HTP
-
There is some evidence that reduced serotonin levels in the brain may contribute to sleep apnea; 5 HTP, a serotonin precursor, may help to regulate the serotonin levels in the brain and decrease the effects of sleep apnea.
Cautions
-
Sleep apnea can be a very serious condition. If you believe you may be suffering from it, it is best to consult a physician.
