Dangers of Teen Smoking

Most adult smokers say they smoked their first cigarette during their teenage years. Teenagers who smoke rarely consider the long-term consequences to their health, and they are oblivious to how they are damaging their bodies. Both parents and teachers should speak early and often about the dangers of smoking

  1. Brain Damage

    • Because the teenage brain is still developing both structurally and chemically, it is highly vulnerable to the effects of nicotine. Nicotine can cause significant damage to the growing brain.

    Gateway Drug

    • Teens who smoke cigarettes are far more likely than non-smokers to also smoke marijuana, abuse alcohol and even try drugs such as cocaine or heroin.

    Reduced Stamina

    • Teenagers who smoke have difficulty maintaining stamina during exercise and will often fall behind their non-smoking peers. This is because smoking causes decreased circulation as well as a rapid heartbeat.

    Psychological Effects

    • Teenagers are more likely to start smoking if they are suffering with behavioral and emotional problems. This could cause for increased psychological problems later in life, as they are choosing to numb their stress rather than confronting it.

    Long-Term Consequences

    • Early cigarette smoking can eventually lead to severe health problems, such as stroke, emphysema, heart disease and numerous types of cancer. The vast majority of lung cancer deaths are caused by cigarette smoking.
