A financial counselor may serve clients in a number of capacities. Credit counselors who help people consolidate bills are referred to as financial counselors. Consulting firms that recommend retirement investments hire financial counselors, as do mortgage and banking companies. Most financial counselors have a 2-year associate's degree in finance or a 4-year degree in accounting. Designations, such as the Financial Counselor Certification, are required in some financial counselor job descriptions.
