Hypoglycemia Diet Plan

Hypoglycemia occurs when blood sugar (glucose) goes too low in the body. Glucose levels should be between 70-150mg. Glucose gets into our bodies through food that is consumed, particularly carbohydrates. Insulin and glucagon regulate glucose in our bodies. Hypoglycemia may occur sporadically throughout a person's life or it may be associated with diabetes. It may also be an indicator of other serious health problems. Eating certain foods can help control hypoglycemia.

  1. Complex Carbohydrates

    • Eating complex carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, brown rice and potatoes can help to keep blood sugar steady because they take longer to digest and will not cause blood sugar to suddenly rise and then drop.

    Protein

    • Protein also takes longer to digest and will give the body energy without causing fluctuations in blood sugar levels. It is best to choose lean proteins such as fish and chicken.

    High Fiber Foods

    • Eating high fiber foods also slows down digestion and helps keep blood sugar levels steady between meals. Choose fruits options with no added sugar and legumes.

    Dairy

    • According to GI Care, a low-fat diet has been shown to help keep blood sugar steady in individuals who experience hypoglycemia.

    Foods to Avoid

    • Reactive hypoglycemia can occur when simple carbohydrates are consumed. This causes a spike in blood sugar and soon after blood sugar suddenly drops. Therefore, simple carbohydrates such as sugar, corn syrup and honey should be avoided. Alcohol and caffeine can also trigger a hypoglycemic episode.

    Eating Habits

    • Eat at least three meals per day and two snacks to keep blood sugar steady. Smaller, more frequent meals may be needed to maintain proper blood sugar levels.

    Sudden Blood-Sugar-Drop Treatment

    • When blood sugar falls suddenly, an individual can drink fruit juice, eat candy or take a glucose tablet to get blood sugar levels back within normal ranges.
