A labor and delivery nurse is a registered nurse who specializes in obstetrics. She has completed training to reach her goal and plays a key role in the safe arrival of a baby.

As with any nurse, the main job of a labor and delivery nurse is to provide care to her patients. She keeps charts and follows doctors' orders.

The most prominent duty of a labor and delivery nurse is to assist a woman in labor and help the doctor deliver the baby.

Pre-labor

The labor nurse welcomes an expectant mother to the maternity ward and prepares her to meet the baby. She inserts any necessary IVs and monitors the mother's and the baby's progress.

Assists Family

A labor nurse also acclimates family members to the birthing process. She helps the father be a part of the big day and encourages him to bond with the baby.

After the Birth

The labor and delivery nurse also gives follow-up care to the baby. She bathes the baby and assists the mother in nursing or feeding the baby. She answers any questions the parents may have about caring for their newborn.
