Viral Pneumonia Symptoms

When you just can't seem to shake a cold in the winter, it's possible that you have viral pneumonia. Pneumonia is the inflammation of your lungs and can be caused by bacteria, fungal infection or a virus. According to the National Library of Medicine (NLM), most of the time viral pneumonia will run its course in a matter of weeks without the need for prescription medications (see Resources).

  1. Cough

    • One of the most recognizable symptoms of viral pneumonia is a dry cough. Most people who end up with viral pneumonia find the cough does not produce much, if any, phlegm.

    Sore Throat

    • A sore throat is consistent with pneumonia that's caused by a virus. The cause of the sore throat could be from the virus itself or as a result of coughing.

    Aches

    • Joint and muscle aches can be a sign of viral pneumonia. Headaches and feeling lethargic can go along with the aching.

    Breathing

    • Feeling short of breath or having a hard time taking in a deep breath can be a sign that your lungs are inflamed.

    Fever

    • Fever, along with chills or sweating, may indicate that you have contracted viral pneumonia.
