Foods for Hyperglycemia & Hypoglycemia

Glucose levels should be between 70-150mg. Glucose gets into our bodies through food that is consumed, particularly carbohydrates. Insulin and glucagon regulate glucose in our bodies. However, sometimes glucose levels go too low (hypoglycemia) or too high (hyperglycemia). Eating certain foods can help control both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.

  1. What is Hyperglycemia?

    • Hyperglycemia occurs when blood sugar (glucose) levels are too high. Hyperglycemia can occur in anyone at various stages of their lifetime, but is mostly associated with diabetes.

Foods to Eat When Dealing with Hyperglycemia

    • People with chronically high glucose levels should get 45 to 65 percent of their daily calories from carbohydrates, 15 to 20 percent of their daily calories from protein and 20 to 35 percent of their daily calories from fats. Also, individuals with hyperglycemia should eat healthy carbohydrates such as fruits and vegetables. Also, they should consume whole grains, legumes and low-fat dairy products.

    What is hypoglycemia?

    • Hypoglycemia occurs when blood sugar is too low. Glucose serves as your main energy source. Hypoglycemia is also associated with diabetes. Having hypoglycemia on a regular basis may indicate serious health problems.

Foods to Eat When Dealing with Hypoglycemia

    • When blood sugar falls, an individual can drink fruit juice, eat candy or take a glucose tablet to get blood sugar levels back within normal ranges.

Foods to Eat for Both Conditions

    • Both conditions will benefit from a healthy diet consisting of healthy carbohydrates, whole grains, lean proteins and low-fat dairy. Eating smaller, more frequent meals will also help to keep blood sugar steady.
