Pharmacist Career Summary

The pharmaceutical industry is one of the biggest in the United States and many other major nations. The dispensing of prescription drugs is closely monitored. There is a lot of money at stake in the field. This makes pharmacists very important. Their jobs require in-depth knowledge and organization in order to act as gatekeepers of prescription drugs.

  1. Function

    • A pharmacist's main job is to give out prescription drugs to customers who have prescriptions from doctors. They are also required to hand out information on these drugs to educate customers.

    Career Knowledge

    • A pharmacist must know details of prescription drugs, which includes in-depth knowledge of the chemistry of these drugs, their functions in the body, what they treat and how the treat it and any possible side effects the drugs may cause. Knowledge of pharmacy law is also a necessity.

    Career Exams

    • To find work as a pharmacist, graduates and potential employees must take two exams. The first is the North American Pharmacist Licensure Exam and the second is Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam.

    Career Advancement

    • Those working as pharmacists have the opportunity to grow with experience. Promotions to senior-level positions such as independent pharmacy owners, hospital pharmacy supervisors and regional pharmacy managers all happen with time and commitment to the job.

    Salary

    • The average annual salary for a pharmacist is over $105,000. Upper-management pharmacists have the potential to earn more.
