Computer viruses cause many repair bills, crashes and disruptions of work. Sometimes they destroy a system to the point of no repair. Learning how to prevent viruses is key in saving money, time, frustration and, more importantly, the computer.

  1. A computer virus is a program that is created to spread through a network of computers, causing difficulties within the computer system.
  2. Software

  3. The easiest way to detect a computer virus is by using anti-virus software. Protection programs that must be purchased are Norton, Kaspersky, Panda or McAfee. There are also free anti-virus programs on the market such as AVG, PCTools, Avira and Avast.
  4. Email Attachments

  5. According to Technews, the number one way that a computer gets a virus is through pictures, files and email. Do not open a file attachment or download a picture unless you know who it is from.
  6. MSN Messenger

  7. Many tech sites, including Tech Radar, state that MSN is known for spreading viruses that send a virus to everyone on a user's friend list. Do not accept files form your friends (these are often attached in photo files).
  8. Internet

  9. The Internet is full of viruses and spyware. Scan any files before downloading, and be wary of clicking on ads.
  10. Updates

  11. New viruses come out continuously. Keeping your anti-virus software updated is of vital importance.
